“Meryem” is the Turkish equivalent of “Mary” and the word “Ana” is the archaic spelling of the modern “Anne,” meaning mother.
The Church of Mary is near Tokali Kilise, outise the guarded Church-complex of Göreme, on a hillcrest. Regarding its state of preservation and colors, the church is certainly one of the most important Christian relics from the scholarly point of view.
The principal fresco shows Chirst with a book in the hand, standing between Mary and St. John the Baptist. The religious scenes depict the birth of Christ, the Crucifixion and important events from Mary’s life. The Greek inscriptions name every portrait, needless to say, to the delight of historians.
The scene of Crucifixion has been painted in a peculiar style which, if offered today, would be described as impressionist, while the shepherd, playing a flute, is astonishingly realistic.
