Ürgüp was called ” Assiana” in antiquity and has been an important settlement throughout the ages. It acquired the name ” Başhisar” (Chief Castle) in the Seldjuk period and lies 18 kilometers away from Nevşehir.

It’s one of the pretty cities of the region with its splendid castle right in the middle of the city, and its Turkish architecture. Besides its rock houses carved in the mountains during the Byzantine and Ottoman periods, Ürgüp’s stone houses with their ornate façades are also very attractive. We can see the most beautiful houses of the region in Ürgüp indeed.

We can mention the Kadı Castle, the Karamanoğulları Mosque, the Altıkapı Mausoleum, and the Tahsinağa Library among the monuments of the Turkish period. Ürgüp’s hotels, touristic establishments, and shops are the main sources of income.
