THE VALLEY OF BELISIRMA

THE  VALLEY OF BELISIRMA THE  VALLEY OF BELISIRMA CAPPADOCIA
The majority of the churches in this valley, which is not often visited, have been built in the Byzantine tradition. The churches of Sümbullü and Direkli, and the Ala Church are outstanding examples of the Byzantine architecture of the 10th and 11th centuries. Especially the church of Direkli with its beautiful wall- painting is a reminder of the golden age which started after the era of Arabic invasions. The St. George Church which is also in the valley of Belisırma dates back to 1295, and shows the names of the Seldjuk Sultan Mesud and of the Byzantine Emperor Andronicus written together. This situation is proof enough for the religious freedom the Christian inhabitants of the times enjoyed under Seldjuk rule.
